A few weeks ago, we made a new friendor in the GTA wedding scene, Jenn from Jenn Kavanagh Photography. She is not only a great wedding photographer but also an inspiring entrepreneur who loves supporting and encouraging her colleagues. Jenn reached out and asked us if we’d like to contribute some calligraphy to an upcoming styled wedding shoot that she was participating in. We haven’t had a ton of opportunities to have our calligraphy photographed so this was such an exciting opportunity! Jenn told us she loved our style and that I should just go for it. We were the last vendor added to the shoot so I didn’t have a ton of time to brainstorm and tinker with designs. I settled on a simple menu that showcased the venue’s spectacular food, a chalkboard featuring a welcome message and chair signs for the bride and groom. Continue below to see the custom calligraphy we contributed to the Rustic Spring Wedding with Natural Touches inspiration shoot featured on Elegant Wedding!
Everything I designed was inspired by the incredible venue - Earth to Table Farm by Pearle Weddings & Events in Flamborough, Ontario. The sprawling farm surrounds a gorgeous old barn featuring a vaulted ceiling with rustic wood beams, beautiful deep brown hard wood floors, and luxurious harvest tables. This venue really is jaw-dropping. I wanted my contributions to reflect the earthy nature of our surroundings.
The goal of the menu was to showcase the venue’s spectacular food. I avoided embellishing with flourishes or ornate borders and instead opted for a whimsical yet tightened script. Kei added a delicate knotted ribbon at the top to tie our menus to the table decor and styling provided by Sandra from Coordinate This Design & Décor Inc.
Inspired the rustic nature of the venue, I decided to use wood burning to apply the Mister and Misses to the wooden chair signs. I had never used this technique before and I was really excited to give it a whirl! I think the signs were a perfect compliment to the soft greenery garden and blooms provided and styled by Cathy at Elegant Bouquets. It was magical seeing our rustic wood chair signs surrounded by the soft flourish of asparagus fern and blush roses.
The chalkboard was also my first ever chalkboard! I’d been experimenting with chalk calligraphy for a while but hadn’t really worked towards a finished product yet. I paired a whimsical modern calligraphy for “Welcome” with a structured hand-lettered typeface for “Friends & Family” to ground everything back to earth. Once again, Cathy used her blooms to add an elegant, botanical touch to our chalkboard.
Head on over to the blog post featured on Elegant Wedding to see the rest of the shoot. Special thanks to Jenn Kavanagh photography for inviting us to contribute to the shoot, Cathy and her team from Elegant Bouquet for organizing everything and to all the other amazing vendors who made this shoot happen. We are honoured to have our first blog feature and so happy that we got the opportunity to work with such amazing people!
